Students’
English Worksheet for Early Graders of the Elementary School:
Is
It Advantageous or Disadvantageous?
One day a father of a first year student of an Elementary
School asked his father to help him doing his homework on English subject. What
to do was to complete a dialogue on greeting, introducing oneself, introducing
one another. Let’s have the following examples:
X: Hell, Good morning!
Y: Hi, Good …………!
A: Hi, my name is John.
What is …… name? How do you do?
B: Hi, my name is
Jenny. How do you do?
etc.
Such kind of exercise is not something new anymore to the
early graders of the Elementary School students. They have got a kind of
exercise book on English in the form of student’s worksheet or Lembar Kerja
Siswa (LKS) and in some
cases the exercises are taken from the English textbooks. Such kind of happening is not strange for us to know. The
students of the first year of the Elementary School have not only memorized or
practiced some expression in English but also done their worksheet by completing
dialogues or reading text using the appropriate words.
Textbooks are no doubt good sources of learning. By
having textbooks many things and activities can be conducted.
The questions now are: Is it right to have such
activities on English subject of the early graders of the Elementary School?
For the specific one is that should the a\early graders of the Elementary
School have wring activities such completing sentences or dialogues as described in the example above? What are
the advantages or disadvantages? What to do then?
